Event Background

During the Edo period, the eastern Nihonbashi area was a vibrant cultural hub. Playhouses like the "Edo Sanza," puppet theaters, and sideshows filled the streets, drawing large crowds. The area was a lively center for publishing illustrated books and Ukiyo-e, and people from commoners to feudal lords enjoyed its rich culture, which spread from Nihonbashi across the country.

The Nihonbashi-za playhouse event was created to revive that excitement and the cultural spirit of the Edo period in modern day Nihonbashi. The goal is to rediscover the local history and culture that's been slowly fading. By revitalizing Edo-era traditions like theater, we aim to stimulate the local community and promote regional development.

We hope this event will be a special day for everyone, a rare chance to experience the timeless charm of the Edo period and catch a glimpse of Nihonbashi's promising future.
